UEL, student flats

[from the archives of 2010]
The University of East London's docklands campus faces the old Royal Albert Dock, once the longest dock in the world. These student flats remind me of Greek windmills for some reason, but I suppose they are intended to be nautical in character — they certainly look good facing the dock. The cylindrical buildings accommodate 384 students; there are five pairs of buildings of this style. Additional student accommodation is on-campus. Architects: Edward Cullinan Architects Ltd., 1996-99.

Building 1000 or as it is now known, Newham Dockside. Completed in 2004, it was however bought by the local authority in 2007 which has occupied three-quarters of it with council back-office staff — but not before a substantial internal re-fit. Situated on the north side of the Royal Albert Dock, London Borough of Newham.

'Sasso Cosmico' by Do Koenig-Vassilakis

[from the archives of 2010]
Translates as 'Cosmic Stone'. 2007. At Westferry Circus, Canary Wharf. The artist, who knew Salvador Dali and Max Ernst now lives in Valdottavo, Italy. About this piece she said... "This Stone of mine was shaped not by the elements but by human hands, my hands. I do not pretend to do better than the elements, on the contrary. I have arrived at what I had in mind when I started this sculpture - to capture the Universe. The Universe, 'Kosmos', is reflected in this sculpture. It mirrors the clouds travelling over it, the sun's rays turning it into gold, a blue sky painting it blue, the grass on the ground changing it green; raindrops covering it or a winter frost with a white coat of crystals".
