Holmenkollen / ski jump


JDS Architects (Julien De Smedt), 2011. The hill is 134m and at its steepest point is 35.7 degrees. 1,000 tons of steel was used in the whole construction. A zip-wire is used in summer. Holmenkollen, Oslo, Norway.

Nobel Peace Center / Oslo


Opened 2005 in what was previously the Oslo West Railway Station (Oslo Vestbanestasjon). The building was originally designed by Georg Andreas Bull (1829-1917) in a neo-renaissance style. Recent design adaptation by David Adjaye. Oslo, Norway.

Oslo City Hall designed by Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson, showing the Grand Hall with paintings by Alf Rolfsen and Henrik Sörensen.   More than 1,850 square metres of mural celebrate aspects of Norwegian society. The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded here. Oslo, Norway.

City Hall / Swan Maidens

One of 16 wooden friezes on Norse mythological themes surrounding the entrance courtyard, made by Dagfin Werenskiold (1892-1977). This one portrays valkyries who fly to earth as swans. Transforming into beautiful maidens they marry 3 brothers, but depart 7 years later. City Hall, Oslo, Norway.

Functionalist masterpiece designed by Arnstein Arneberg and Magnus Poulsson, begun in 1931 and formally opened in 1950, delayed by the period of Nazi occupation. Constructed entirely of Norwegian materials and decorated by Norwegian artists. Two large floors are freely open to visitors. Oslo, Norway.
