St Nicolas Shoreham / Entrance

Entrance to the church of St Nicolas at Old Shoreham. According to British History Online, in the mid-C12 this doorway replaced the previous entrance in the north wall of the tower. St Nicolas / BN43

Grade 1 listed Anglican church in Old Shoreham, close to the river Adur. A site of Saxon origins although significantly rebuilt after the Norman conquest. Of cruciform plan around a central Norman tower. Flint with stone dressings including C12 carvings. Later restoration by the Victorians including the stained glass windows. Architects: Yee Associates, Engineers: Cass Hayward LLP, opened 2013. 214m long footbridge with a pivoting 50m central span. Steel on concrete piles with laminated-glass parapets. For pedestrians and cyclists crossing the river Adur. The bridge is formally known as the Adur Ferry Bridge. Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex, UK.

View from northeast of the Grade 1 listed St Mary de Haura, founded circa 1103 with much C12 structure remaining. Of Norman and Transitional style using stone, flint, and cobbles. The flying buttresses to the clerestorey are early examples of this structural technique. The funds for the building may have been sourced from the harbour taxes of that era.
