Steven's Eyot / KT2

Small island on the river Thames between Teddington Lock and Kingston upon Thames. An eyot, or ait, is middle English for an islet. One source says that the name derives from the boatman who lived in the only cottage that stood in the marshland that once covered the area. According to historical records the Turk family were ferrymen and fishermen as far back as Tudor times. R.J.Turk & Sons was established c.1710 as a boat building business. Boat building has relocated to Chatham in Kent, although boat trips along the Thames remain. Kingston upon Thames, London.
