'London Pride' / Frank Dobson

Sculptor: Frank Dobson (1886-1963, London). Bronze female figures of 1951, cast c.1987, Grade II listed. The bowl was intended for Saxifraga × urbium. South Bank, London Borough of Lambeth.

An evergreen perennial to 30cm in height, forming wide mats of rosettes of spoon-shaped, long-stalked leaves with scalloped margins. Small pink-flushed white flowers are borne in lax panicles from early summer

Saxifraga × urbium rapidly colonised the bombed sites left by the London Blitz of the early 1940s. As such it is symbolic of the resilience of London and ordinary Londoners
